A debug mode is available in the PC Edition of Kentucky Route Zero. Disabled by default, this mode includes functions and features that are not intended to be accessed during normal play, and are not polished enough to be considered for inclusion in the TV Edition.

Debug tools may be enabled by editing settings.krz, and by changing the value in the line {{{1}}} to instead read True.

Some keyboard shortcuts only work with a QWERTY layout. If you are not using a keyboard of this sort, switch your operating system to QWERTY before launching the game.

Controls

  • \ opens the debug information panel.
  • [ opens the "helpers" menu, used to turn on/off logging, adjust pixel scaling, restart scenes, and force-end conversations.
  • ] opens the bookmarks menu, used to quickly skip to different points in various acts.
  • f enables "fast mode," where the game runs at multiple times its normal speed.
  • i hides all informational popups.
  • u hides all overlays, including the mouse cursor, dialogue windows, informational popups, and pause menu.
  • m mutes all sounds.
  • s enables "slow mode," where the game runs at a slowed-down speed.

The wrongler

High resolution screenshot tool

This tool allows players to take screenshots at a much higher resolution than at their native monitor resolution. All screenshots taken using this tool can be found in the Screenshots subfolder, generated in the same location as settings.krz.

"Resolution factor" refers to a multiplier based on a player's in-game resolution, i.e. a factor of 1 is native resolution, while a factor of 2 would be double that.

  • F9takes a high resolution screenshot.
  • Left Ctrl + Up Arrow increases the resolution factor by 1.
  • Left Ctrl + Down Arrow decreases the resolution factor by 1.
  • Left Ctrl + Page Up multiplies the resolution factor by 2.
  • Left Ctrl + Page Down divides the resolution factor by 2.

Here And There Along The Echo phone selection

Debug mode may be used with Here And There Along The Echo to display different telephone models.

  • z changes the phone to the classic pink phone.
  • x changes to the office-style speakerphone.
  • c changes to the white, modern-style phone.
  • v changes to the black, vintage-style phone.
  • b changes to the classic white phone.

Act V controls

In Act V (and maybe some other places), some specific controls are available:

  • Left Ctrl + Scrollwheel zooms in or out with the camera.
  • Left Ctrl + Middle Click reverts back to the intended zoom level.
  • Left Ctrl + Left & Right Arrows advances or rewinds the current of time (changes shadows and weather).
