A debug mode is available in the PC Edition of Kentucky Route Zero. Disabled by default, this mode includes functions and features that are not intended to be accessed during normal play, and are not polished enough to be considered for inclusion in the TV Edition.

Debug tools may be enabled by editing settings.krz, and by changing the value in the line <setting name="console" value="False" /> to instead read True.

Some keyboard shortcuts only work with a QWERTY layout. If you are not using a keyboard of this sort, switch your operating system to QWERTY before launching the game.

Controls[edit]

General
  • \ opens the debug information panel.
  • [ or F1 opens the "helpers" menu, used to turn on/off logging, adjust pixel scaling, restart scenes, and force-end conversations.
  • ] or F2 opens the bookmarks menu, used to quickly skip to different points in various acts.
  • -/= decreases/increases the text size.
  • f enables "fast mode," where the game runs at multiple times its normal speed.
  • i hides all informational popups.
  • m mutes all sounds.
  • s enables "slow mode," where the game runs at a slowed-down speed.
  • u hides all overlays, including the mouse cursor, dialogue windows, informational popups, and pause menu.
Act 2 & 4, flying on Julian and floating down the river
  • g toggles first-person view.
Act V-specific
  • Left Ctrl + Scroll wheel zooms in or out with the camera.
  • Left Ctrl + Middle click reverts back to the intended zoom level.
  • Left Ctrl + Left/Right advances/rewinds the current of time (changes shadows and weather).
  • z changes shadow resolution.

The wrongler[edit]

The wrongler enables full control of the camera in the game, similar to navigational abilities in wrongles. A demonstration can be seen here.

General
  • F10 toggles the wrongler on and off.
  • Tab toggles input.
  • Ctrl + C copies the wrongle settings to the clipboard.
  • Ctrl + V pastes the wrongle settings from the clipboard.
Navigation
  • w/a/s/d moves the camera forward/left/backwards/right.
  • Scroll wheel adjusts FOV, i.e. zooms in and out.
  • Shift moves downwards.
  • Space moves upwards.
  • y toggles "floor mode."
Navigation speed
  • Ctrl + Scroll wheel increases and decreases the speed.
  • Speed presets: z for 0.25, x for 0.75, c for 1, v for 3, b for 8.
Clip planes
  • Right click reverts the default/inclusive position of the near/far clip plane.
  • Left/Right adjusts the near clip plane.
  • Up/Down adjusts the far clip plane.

High resolution screenshot tool[edit]

This tool allows players to take screenshots at a much higher resolution than at their native monitor resolution. All screenshots taken using this tool can be found in the Screenshots folder, generated in the same location as settings.krz.

"Resolution factor" refers to a multiplier based on a player's in-game resolution, i.e. a factor of 1 is native resolution, while a factor of 2 would be double that.

Note that high-resolution screenshots only work with "direct" rendering – the game must be set at the default brightness level (4), "modern" rendering mode, and a resolution below 4K. This information is also displayed in the debug information panel (\) under "RENDER."

Also note that higher resolutions consume significant amounts of system memory. If you experience a crash when taking a high resolution screenshot, reduce the resolution factor and try again.

  • F9 takes a high resolution screenshot.
  • Left Ctrl + Up/Down increases/decreases the resolution factor by 1.
  • Left Ctrl + Page Up/Page Down multiplies/divides the resolution factor by 2.

Here And There Along The Echo phone selection[edit]

Debug mode may be used with Here And There Along The Echo to display different telephone models.

  • z changes the phone to the classic pink phone.
  • x changes the phone to the office-style yellow phone.
  • c changes the phone to the tan, modern-style phone.
  • v changes the phone to the black, vintage-style phone.
  • b changes the phone to the classic white phone.
