They are considered to be ghosts.

In [[Act I]], Emily, Ben, and Bob first appear in the basement of [[Equus Oils]] playing a game with a twenty-sided die. After losing their die, Conway must retrieve it. When he finds and walks back to the table to return, they are gone.
