{{Materials}}
A '''debug mode''' is available in the PC Edition of {{KRZ}}. Disabled by default, this mode includes functions and features that are not intended to be accessed during normal play, and are not polished enough to be considered for inclusion in the TV Edition.

Debug tools may be enabled by editing [[settings.krz]], and by changing the {{code|value}} in the line {{code|&lt;setting name&#61;"console" value&#61;"'''False'''" /&gt;}} to instead read {{code|'''True'''}}.

Some keyboard shortcuts only work with a QWERTY layout. If you are not using a keyboard of this sort, switch your operating system to QWERTY before launching the game.

== Controls ==

;General
* {{Shortcut|\}} opens the debug information panel.<br>
* {{Shortcut|[}} or {{Shortcut|F1}} opens the "helpers" menu, used to turn on/off logging, adjust pixel scaling, restart scenes, and force-end conversations.
* {{Shortcut|]}} or {{Shortcut|F2}} opens the bookmarks menu, used to quickly skip to different points in various acts.
* {{Shortcut|-}}/{{Shortcut|&#61;}} decreases/increases the text size.
* {{Shortcut|f}} enables "fast mode," where the game runs at multiple times its normal speed.
* {{Shortcut|i}} hides all informational popups.
* {{Shortcut|m}} mutes all sounds.
* {{Shortcut|s}} enables "slow mode," where the game runs at a slowed-down speed.
* {{Shortcut|u}} hides all overlays, including the mouse cursor, dialogue windows, informational popups, and pause menu.

;Act 2 & 4, flying on Julian and floating down the river
* {{Shortcut|g}} toggles first-person view.

;Act V-specific
* {{Shortcut|Left Ctrl + Scroll wheel}} zooms in or out with the camera.
* {{Shortcut|Left Ctrl + Middle click}} reverts back to the intended zoom level.
* {{Shortcut|Left Ctrl + Left}}/{{Shortcut|Right}} advances/rewinds the current of time (changes shadows and weather).
* {{Shortcut|z}} changes shadow resolution.
<!-- + letter shortcuts for specific moments of the day -->

== The wrongler ==

The wrongler enables full control of the camera in the game, similar to navigational abilities in [[wrongle|wrongles]]. A demonstration can be seen [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TbNm90H6PjM here].

;General
* {{Shortcut|F10}} toggles the wrongler on and off.
* {{Shortcut|Tab}} toggles input.
* {{Shortcut|Ctrl + C}} copies the wrongle settings to the clipboard.
* {{Shortcut|Ctrl + V}} pastes the wrongle settings from the clipboard.

;Navigation
* {{Shortcut|w}}/{{Shortcut|a}}/{{Shortcut|s}}/{{Shortcut|d}} moves the camera forward/left/backwards/right.
* {{Shortcut|Scroll wheel}} adjusts FOV, i.e. zooms in and out.
* {{Shortcut|Shift}} moves downwards.
* {{Shortcut|Space}} moves upwards.
* {{Shortcut|y}} toggles "floor mode."

;Navigation speed
* {{Shortcut|Ctrl + Scroll wheel}} increases and decreases the speed.
* Speed presets: {{Shortcut|z}} for 0.25, {{Shortcut|x}} for 0.75, {{Shortcut|c}} for 1, {{Shortcut|v}} for 3, {{Shortcut|b}} for 8.

;Clip planes
* {{Shortcut|Right click}} reverts the default/inclusive position of the near/far clip plane.
* {{Shortcut|Left}}/{{Shortcut|Right}} adjusts the near clip plane.
* {{Shortcut|Up}}/{{Shortcut|Down}} adjusts the far clip plane.

== High resolution screenshot tool ==

This tool allows players to take screenshots at a much higher resolution than at their native monitor resolution. All screenshots taken using this tool can be found in the Screenshots folder, generated in the same location as settings.krz.

"Resolution factor" refers to a multiplier based on a player's in-game resolution, i.e. a factor of 1 is native resolution, while a factor of 2 would be double that.

Note that high-resolution screenshots only work with "direct" rendering – the game must be set at the default brightness level (4), "modern" rendering mode, and a resolution below 4K. This information is also displayed in the debug information panel ({{Shortcut|\}}) under "RENDER."

Also note that higher resolutions consume significant amounts of system memory. If you experience a crash when taking a high resolution screenshot, reduce the resolution factor and try again.

* {{Shortcut|F9}} takes a high resolution screenshot.
* {{Shortcut|Left Ctrl + Up}}/{{Shortcut|Down}} increases/decreases the resolution factor by 1.
* {{Shortcut|Left Ctrl + Page Up}}/{{Shortcut|Page Down}} multiplies/divides the resolution factor by 2.

== ''Here And There Along The Echo'' phone selection ==

Debug mode may be used with {{HATATE}} to display different telephone models.

* {{Shortcut|z}} changes the phone to the classic pink phone.
* {{Shortcut|x}} changes the phone to the office-style yellow phone.
* {{Shortcut|c}} changes the phone to the tan, modern-style phone.
* {{Shortcut|v}} changes the phone to the black, vintage-style phone.
* {{Shortcut|b}} changes the phone to the classic white phone.
{{title}} is the fifth and final {{KRZ}} interlude, released on January 28, 2020 alongside [[Act V]] and the game's TV Edition. Its title comes from the poem "[[wikipedia:The Death of the Hired Man|The Death of the Hired Man]]" by [[wikipedia:Robert Frost|Robert Frost]].

The title is also the name of a play directed by [[James B. Carrington]], an adaptation of the Frost poem, for which he seeks a venue throughout the course of the main game.
The events of the interlude ''Death of the Hired Man'' mirror that of Frost's poem of the same name, even borrowing some lines directly from the poem. Despite Carrington's performance of his own ''Death of the Hired Man'' having no audience or actors, he has found himself within a version of the story nonetheless.
{{title}} is the second {{KRZ}} interlude, released online on November 22, 2013 between [[Act II|Acts II]] and [[Act III|III]].

[[File:EntertainmentHead.png|thumb|right|The cover for the ''Entertainment'' script.]]
It is also the name of a play directed by [[James B. Carrington]], with adaptation by [[Joseph Wheattree]] of two original plays: ''A Reckoning'' and ''A Bar-fly'' (both written by [[Lem Doolittle]]), to be performed simultaneously. The setting was designed by [[Lula Chamberlain]]. In the interlude, it is performed in [[the Lower Depths]].

''The Entertainment'' is available for download [http://kentuckyroutezero.com/the-entertainment/ here].

== Development & background ==

The game was originally developed for the Oculus Rift, a version which is now unavailable and unsupported. This design, which gave players direct control of the camera, constrained detailed action to happen close to the player character and resulted in the decision to put the player on-stage as an actor, albeit one with no lines. [[Cardboard Computer]] stated in a December 2013 [[newsletter]] that the game and one-act play was inspired by modern-era playwrights [[wikipedia:Eugene O'Neill|Eugene O'Neill]], [[wikipedia:Samuel Beckett|Samuel Beckett]], and [[wikipedia:Maxim Gorky|Maxim Gorky]].<ref>[http://kentuckyroutezero.com/pub/newsletter-archive/2013-dec-kentucky-route-zero-release-schedule-update-the-entertainment-other-news.html Kentucky Route Zero - Release schedule update, "The Entertainment" & other news]</ref>

The "brick sandwich" on the Bar-fly's table is in reference to a circumvention of [[wikipedia:Raines law|Raines law]], a prohibition-era law outlawing the sale of alcohol on Sunday except for in hotels (the setting of both ''The Entertainment'' and Eugene O'Neill's [[wikipedia:The Iceman Cometh|The Iceman Cometh]]). Some bar owners would mock the law by serving a clay brick between two slices of bread, thus satisfying the minimal legal requirement of serving food.
Of note, the LCCN listed is in a format that was in use before the year 2000. A modern printing would require the LCCN in a modern format, which in this case would be '''57006498'''.
[[File:EchoRiverPostcard.jpg|thumb|right|''Here And There Along The Echo'' [[postcards|postcard]].]]
{{title}} is the third {{KRZ}} interlude, released on October 30, 2014 between Acts [[Act III|III]] and [[Act IV|IV]]. The game, described as "dialing software," consists of a phone that can only dial the following number:
:<span class="inconsolata">+1 (270) 301-5797</span>
Calling this number allows players, as [[Emily, Ben, and Bob]], to have an automated conversation with [[Will]], a guide at the [[Bureau of Secret Tourism]] who provides information about the [[Echo River]].

''Here And There Along The Echo'' is available for download [http://kentuckyroutezero.com/here-and-there-along-the-echo/ here]. Players may also access the interactive voice response system by calling the phone number on the postcard.

== Overview ==

The guide offers information about a number of locations seen in [[Act IV]], including the [[Rum Colony]], the [[Iron Pariah]], the [[Silo of Late Reflections]], [[Sam & Ida's]], and the [[Mucky Mammoth]]. The guide also describes a town inhabited by horses that walk the streets, and that has its own roads, but no roads leading to or from the town. [[Dogwood Drive]] is one of the streets in this town.<ref name="morse">[https://steamcommunity.com/app/231200/discussions/0/617336568075739789/ <nowiki>[SOLVED]</nowiki> Mysterious morse-like code in 'Here and There along the Echo']</ref>

Dialing the extension 7360 at the beginning of the game leads to dialogue from Will requesting players to tell the Bureau why they can't sleep. In Act IV, Will checks his answering machine and listens to messages that seem to be responses to this question.

== Encoded messages ==

If the player lets the phone sit for a while without picking up the receiver, they will begin to receive a series of strange phone calls.

=== Numbers stations ===

One call features a female voice reciting a long string of numbers, similar to a [[wikipedia:Numbers station|numbers station]] broadcast. The entire broadcast is just over 40 minutes long and can be listened to below ([https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=msar8tdc4zs mirror]):
[[File:Phone4_802.ogg]]

This broadcast is an encoding of the following message:<ref name="numbers">[https://steamcommunity.com/app/231200/discussions/0/620695877410574318/ <nowiki>[solved!]</nowiki> Strange mystery "numbers" on phone in Here and There Along the Echo (spoilers)]</ref>

<poem>
By night we suffer, wandering, night frees the imprisoned spirits, and his cage abandoned Cerberus himself strays. At dawn the law demands return to the pools of Lethe: we are borne across, and the ferryman counts the load he’s carried.
</poem>

This is a direct quote from [[wikipedia:Propertius|Propertius]]' book of elegies, ''Elegiae''.

=== Morse code-like cipher ===

Another call consists of fax machine noises which sound similar to morse code. This call encodes the following message:<ref name="morse" />

Operator: Operator speaking.
Caller: Yes, hello. Hi. Is this Gwen?
Operator: Oh, hello Joe. How can I help you.
Caller: How are you, Gwen?
Operator: Bless your heart, Joe, I’m at work.
Caller: Me too.
Operator: What can I do for you?
Caller: Well, Slim’s got three or four shelves just about full of canned carrots and they’re not moving, you know.
Operator: Ok.
Caller: And he says “Joe, get these out of here!”
Operator: Joe, I don’t mean to …
Caller: I was going to make a few calls and see who wants them.
Operator: I can connect you.
Caller: Got anyone in mind?
Operator: Who were you thinking of calling?
Caller: Well … I don’t remember …
Operator: You don’t remember who you were calling?
Caller: I had a couple ideas, but I don’t remember the numbers.
Operator: I can look them up -- with whom should I connect you, Joe?
Caller: Well I was thinking about this town -- I mean the folks in this town I used to know about.
Operator: Which town?
Caller: When I was a boy, Gwen. I don’t remember the name of it.
Operator: What’s the listing? I can try it by name.
Caller: You’d know it if you heard about it. There’s no roads in or out. But it has its own little roads.
Operator: Joe, I need a name to look up.
Caller: Yeah, I’m trying to remember one. There was a man like a preacher. There was a school, teachers. Garbage trucks. Mail. A young lady who fixed boots …
Operator: You said you had some carrots?
Caller: Canned carrots. For the horses!
Operator: The horses.
Caller: They have horses.
Operator: How about I look up a few horse farms for you, Joe?
Caller: They weren’t farm horses. They didn’t live in a stable -- They just walked on the streets! Like people, you know?
Operator: Ok, Joe. I need a street or something, though.
Caller: There was a … Dogwood Drive!
Operator: Dogwood Drive. Alright, Joe, I’ll see what I can find.
== Phone models ==

Five different phone models are available in-game. The model shown is dependent on actions players have taken in the first three acts. The model of phone can be forcibly changed by following the instructions [https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=336101991 here].
File:HATATE Phone 5.png
</gallery>

Due to the fact the TV Edition comes as a standalone game (without the ability for players to easily access the image of the postcard), Cardboard Computer updated the interlude to include a scrap of paper with the phone number written on it, placed on the table next to the phones.

<gallery>
File:HATATE Phone 1b.png
File:HATATE Phone 5b.png
</gallery>

Depending on certain criteria, a player may see another phone during Here and There Along the Echo than another player. This list will be updated as we finalize the remaining phone model conditions.

*If there is no applicable save data found, the pink phone will be present.
*If you follow the bureaucracy loop in the [[Bureau of Reclaimed Spaces]] more than 3 times, the office speaker phone will be present.

== Weird Telephones ==

Between 2014 and 2015, [[Cardboard Computer]] auctioned off three real-life telephones. These phones were modified by [[Tamas Kemenczy]] so that they were only able to dial the singular phone number.

== Overview ==

If the player lets the phone sit for a while without picking up the receiver, they will begin to receive a series of strange phone calls.
=== Numbers stations ===
== Phone models ==

Five different phone models are available in-game. The model shown is dependent on actions players have taken in the first three acts. The model of phone can be forcibly changed by following the instructions [https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=336101991 here].
File:HATATE Phone 3.png
File:HATATE Phone 4.png
File:HATATE Phone 5.png
</gallery>

Due to the fact the TV Edition comes as a standalone game (without the ability for players to easily access the image of the postcard), Cardboard Computer updated the interlude to include a scrap of paper with the phone number written on it, placed on the table next to the phones.

<gallery>
File:HATATE Phone 1b.png
File:HATATE Phone 5b.png
</gallery>

Depending on certain criteria, a player may see another phone during Here and There Along the Echo than another player. This list will be updated as we finalize the remaining phone model conditions.

If there is no applicable save data found, the pink phone will be present.
If you follow the bureaucracy loop in the [[Bureau of Reclaimed Spaces]] more than 3 times, the office speaker phone will be present.

== Weird Telephones ==

== Overview ==

== Encoded messages ==

If the player lets the phone sit for a while without picking up the receiver, they will begin to receive a series of strange phone calls.

=== Numbers stations ===

<poem>
By night we suffer, wandering, night frees the imprisoned spirits, and his cage abandoned Cerberus himself strays. At dawn the law demands return to the pools of Lethe: we are borne across, and the ferryman counts the load he’s carried.
</poem>

This is a direct quote from [[wikipedia:Propertius|Propertius]]' book of elegies, ''Elegiae''.

=== Morse code-like cipher ===

For the TV edition and final PC edition, Cardboard Computer added a scrap of paper with the phone number for Here and There Along the Echo placed on the table. This was done as players would now no longer need to visit the website to play the interlude, and thus would have no way of seeing the postcard to know which number to dial.

[[File:Karaokefont.png|thumb|left|"Karaoke"]]

The "[[Too Late to Love You]]" karaoke sequence features a font called "Karaoke".
[[File:Terminalfont.png|thumb|left|"Terminal"]]

Computer text, such as [[XANADU]]'s or [[Joseph]]'s features a font called "Terminal". Displays with a screen flicker effect.

[[File:Fontsymbols s.png|thumb|left|"Symbols"]]

"Symbols" found in clickable pop-ups for inspecting objects or speaking to characters, and lower-screen action buttons such as for controlling flashlights, umbrellas, and degaussing.

[[File:Naivefont.jpg|thumb|left|"Naive"]]

A custom font called "Naive" was introduced in the 2018 'public-beta' branch on Steam, replacing Podkova for title cards and act screens. Features an effect similar to the '''{{Zero}}''' text shader. Was likely replaced due to readability issues.

''Kentucky Route Zero'' also makes use of custom-created fonts. For example:

* The "[[Too Late to Love You]]" karaoke sequence ("Karaoke").
* Computer text, such as [[XANADU]]'s or [[Joseph]]'s ("Terminal").
* Symbols found in clickable pop-ups for inspecting objects or speaking to characters, and lower-screen action buttons such as for controlling flashlights, umbrellas, and degaussing ("Symbols").

The title cards used in the beta build were also a custom font ("Naive").
